Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to add another 1 billion people in the next 30 years. 40% of the current population lack access to clean water. This number will continue to expand, and centralized models of infrastructure development will not meet the growing challenge of serving the population.

UNTAPPED’s PAYGO water platform connects underserved consumers to a reliable, affordable, on-demand supply of clean water. UNTAPPED uses decentralized water treatment centers as the hub for the PAYGO water distribution platform By integrating decentralized water infrastructure with proven technology for last-mile distribution, UNTAPPED makes both more efficient.

Target Beneficiaries

UNTAPPED today serves clean water to over 300,000 consumers in Haiti, Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana and Burkina Faso. The majority of UNTAPPED’s current customers live on less than $2/day and did not previously have affordable access to clean water. The platform also employs over 90 local staff in areas with over 80% unemployment while helping 527 micro-retailers double their net incomes reselling water and other essential goods.

Mission and Vision

In the past 6 months we have reached five different Africa countries with five different local partners. Our short-term goal is to continue to grow with those partners to establish a larger presence in their regions. From there we want to expand to Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Our long-term goal is to reach 100 million beneficiaries with safe, affordable water by 2030.

Innovation Description

UNTAPPED offers three technology solutions that expand affordable, quality water services to fast-growing urban areas through PAYGO systems: 1. PAYGO Water kiosk. Decentralized water treatment centers with metered distribution and digital payment capture. 2. PAYGO water ATM. Stand-alone safe water access point with mobile payments. 3. PAYGO home smart-meters. Mobile pre-paid water metering. Each solution expands operator service coverage through proven, innovative technologies for safe water delivery. On-demand, convenient, affordable safe water delivery. At the same time, each solution secures subscriber payments through mobile technology, tracks consumption, and reliably manages prepaid subscriber revenue.

Competitive Advantage

UNTAPPED unlocks non-conventional sources of financing by creating a direct link between subscriber payments and repayment of financing. This is done through equipment operating leases where subscriber pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) revenue streams secure lease payments. This lowers repayment and offtake risks for commercial investors. PAYGO home smart-meters, water ATMs, and water kiosk equipment are leased to operators by UNTAPPED. Digital payments for water from each of the PAYGO devices provides assurance for investors financing the water projects, enabling larger capital input for significant scale.

Planned Goals and Milestones

UNTAPPED is continuing to develop our platform and looking to expand throughout Africa and Southeast Asia with new partners in the coming years.
