Problem

Problem: Land, Water and Hunger: In 2014 diagnosed with cancer ,unemployed and having no food to eat and no yard to grow hence I am living in a township I invented a vegetable a growing system that expands space and saves water, while promoting ,sustainable local food systems and eradicating poverty

Solution

Umgibe enables anyone anywhere to grow vegetables in the most unlikely place while saving water and growing food all year round.We address challenges making it difficult for small-scale farmers to grow enough vegetables to eat and sell to formal markets, and for the formal market to procure from small-scale farmers. We provide a consistency based growing platform and assurance to our clients all year long.

Target Beneficiaries

Umgibe assist by bringing change in the lives of refugees, women, disabled, youth ,child headed families and also displaced communities in Africa to produce healthy affordable food, leading towards enduring food security, to create jobs, to alleviate poverty, and transferring skills through training. We are currently providing a sustainable source of income for more than 603 families through Umgibe’s 51 partner co-operatives. We create local markets for organic products.

Competitive Advantage

The benefits of using Umgibe is that it is not labour intensive, there is no need for physical labour even children , disabled people and someone who has never done gardening can use Umgibe method. It does not matter how small the space is umgibe can be used for subsistence or small scale commercial farming. Creation of rural employment opportunities and skills transfer to up to 250 people per year. This system promotes increased vegetable production and foster competitive marketing of the local products.Umgibe can be replicated in every household and as a result create food security throughout the nation.

Planned Goals and Milestones

Currently in the process of purchasing land to install 912 Growing Systems enhancing, productivity for our network. Our aim is to manufacture and distribute our Growing Systems all over South Africa and Africa at large especially to those who have no land. To increase vegetable production by installing more systems every year.
