U-Reporters opt-in to become a U-Reporter. Once people hear about U-Report via field recruitments (by partners such as the Girl Guides) or via media broadcasts, they simply send a message to opt in and register anonymously as a U-Reporter. U-Reporters engage in weekly polls which is used to improve UNICEF country programmes, partner projects or local or national policies. Results from polls are always shared back with U-Reporters. U-Reporters also receive alerts that contain useful information on a range of issues. Messages can be targeted based on age, gender or location or sent globally to everyone through a coordinated action. U-Report provides a safe space online and through SMS, to share opinions, get feedback and learn new things around a number of topics such as children’s rights, HIV/AIDS, general health, ending violence, gender equality, security, disease outbreaks, and many more development issues the most marginalised people face. All Incoming messages are analysed by RapidPro, the software that powers U-Report, and are displayed on a dashboard in real time, presenting trends and geographical patterns and highlighting areas of greatest need. U-Report is governed by steering committees that must include at least one non-government partner. Data collected by U-Report is used by a variety of stakeholders ranging from global UN agencies, to local government officers or NGOs, and of course the U-Reporters themselves.
