Our platform Aspect (well tested and well used in many countries) is a back-end application that allows health systems to move test results from diagnostics instantly to health workers or others. In other words, suppose a clinic has a GeneXpert, or a central lab has an M2000 diagnostic device. In the past, all results from those diagnostics used to be written in a ledger and then driven to individual sites to be sorted and eventually given to patients (with many errors and losses along the way). Aspect sits on a central server and enables health professionals to tell diagnostic devices to move test data in certain ways. "Send a text message to Dr. Amala for all drug-resistant TB cases." Or, "Aggregate all high HIV Viral Load results and produce a monthly report, then email to the Minister of Health." We have been doing this for several years successfully in many countries, and have moved over 8,000,000 diagnostic results. Aspect also offers dashboards that help health systems get a quick overview of their diagnostics. Aspect Reporter sits on a health worker's Android phone and 1) receives results instantly from testing devices, 2) searches for certain patients or results, and 3) prompts health workers to confirm patients on treatment (or confirm treatment type). Health systems can now see the gap between positive diagnoses and patients on treatment, focus resources on finding and accounting for patients who are not confirmed on treatment, and track treatment results.

Problem

One of the biggest reasons that health challenges are difficult to surmount in LMICs is delays. And one of the biggest delays happens between the time that a sample is taken from a presumptive infected individual and a diagnosis is returned, followed by treatment initiation. In addition to these delays, there is no way to confirm patients on treatment, resulting in a huge gap between the number of samples with positive diagnosis and the number of patients on treatment.

Competitive Advantage

Currently the main way of moving diagnostic results in these infrastructure-challenged places is on paper, in large ledgers. It often takes week before a minister of health knows what's happening in a particular area, and can take months before a presumptive patient gets the results of a test -- during which the individual can be spreading disease instead of getting on treatment.
