Stage 3: Proof of Concept
Proof of Concept: We have installed 30 units in Haiti and have demonstrated the proof of concept in field trials and ongoing use. Additionally, we have units in Cambodia and Namibia

Funds Raised to Date
Sun Buckets addresses the global cooking crisis. We provide a portable stored solar thermal energy source with temperatures similar to fire without the fuel, the fire, or the emissions. Over 700 million households in energy impoverished areas spend 25% of their income to cook and in many cases using wood, charcoal, and animal dung. The emissions from these fires result in an estimated 4 million premature deaths a year and account for around 20% of global climate forcing.
Sun Buckets collect, store, and recover solar thermal energy in a portable format and at temperatures that compete with fire cooking. Sun Buckets are respectful of cooking traditions and cultures, allowing users to cook with their own pots and pans and using traditional methods of frying, baking, boiling, and other cooking approaches.
Sun Buckets benefit the energy impoverished who have limited fuel choices, who cook with solid fuels, and/or who spend a large portion of their income for cooking fuel.
Mission and Vision
We aim to provide solar fuel options for cooking while respecting cooking cultures and traditions.
Sun Buckets use an innovative collection and storage system to store heat in a portable, insulated bucket. When users are ready to cook, they simply remove the insulated cover, and cook at very high (fire) temperatures without kindling, fire starters, fuel, flames, or emissions.
To our knowledge, there are no other stored solar thermal cookers that allow users to cook when and where they like while preserving cooking traditions of their culture.
Planned Goals and Milestones
We are working on (a) field installations and demonstrations and (b) long-term storage.
