SEE ALLInnovation: Africa’s water projects are solar-powered water supply systems that pump water from a borehole to a raised 10,000-liter tank. The borehole is drilled to the aquifer and tested to ensure that it can provide sufficient water yield for the community and is safe for human consumption. After the water reaches the tank, pipes channel water to multiple water points in the village. Given the large populations in the communities we serve, the number of water points is typically 10-15 water points in a radius of 4-6 kilometers of the village. Once a prospective water project is approved and sponsored, iA assists the community to elect committee members who manage and monitor all stages of the water project during and after construction. Our team strongly encourages women to join and lead these committees since they traditionally bear the responsibility of collecting water for the entire household. After the water committee is elected, iA provides them with ongoing training about the water system to equip them with the tools and knowledge they need to maintain and take ownership of the project when construction is complete. To further ensure the sustainability of the project, iA’s community-based model requires the committee to collect monthly contributions from the community to cover future maintenance costs that may arise.
