Shinbone sells pre-packaged, expandable solar kits that include a solar panel, a battery, and an Intelligent Load Switch (known as a Shinbox Taka). Shinbone can remotely activate and monitor its systems over the GSM network, which will allow for mobile payments in the future. The company can also meet increased energy demand by adding on to units that have already been installed rather than replacing existing units. Through Shinbox, Shinbone can track important data like default rates, the locations of systems, the number of units in the field, the frequency of payments, the amount of kerosene replaced, and the energy produced by its systems. With a $150,000 award from Scaling Off-Grid Energy: A Grand Challenge for Development, Shinbone is piloting an extremely low-cost Plug-and-Power system at varying wattages in the underserved market of Benin and Ghana. Scaling Off-Grid Energy funding is helping Shinbone develop its direct sales presence in Ghana as a pilot country for direct distribution, and working with distribution partners like Focus Energy in Benin.
