With over 50,000 members taking part in educational technological activities in over 40 branches throughout Israel, she codes; offers women the opportunity to develop a career in software engineering. We offer six study courses, ranging from entry level to advanced. she codes; activities include weekly meetups, hackathons, and coding skills lectures. These activities are designed to allow participants to learn and implement the content in the best possible manner. Not only do we provide a software development curriculum but also an environment of strong role models who break industry stereotypes. One of our biggest strengths is the community we have built. she codes; offers an environment of inclusion, inspiration, support, and encouragement for women to pursue software development positions. We support our members beginning in the early stages of education and through their various career paths. The wonderful she codes; team of nearly 500 devoted volunteers, together with various partners from the hi-tech industry, all universities, philanthropic funds, and the Israeli government, have made it possible for us to grow organically and quickly. Among our forty branches, we have branches that cater to the Ultra-Orthodox, Arab, and Druze populations, women on maternity leave, and women who are more advanced in their careers. We also operate next-generation branches at high schools for young girls.

Problem

The hi-tech industry is one of Israel’s leading economic growth engines, yet over the past decade, we see a severe lack of technological personnel and software programmers in particular. Hi-tech companies are struggling to find tech professionals, and at the same time women are significantly underrepresented in this industry: only 30% of hi-tech workers are females, and they comprise only 23% of tech professionals and only 16% of tech management (Israel Innovation Authority, 2018).

Solution

The lack of technological personnel goes hand in hand with our goal to reach 50% female software engineers in the Israeli hi-tech industry. As part of our strategy, a major emphasis is put on teaching programming languages in high demand in the Israeli job market. This helps to reduce latent recruitment barriers such as gender, or the lack of an academic degree. Additionally, we are continually partnering with leading hi-tech companies in order to develop desirable content.

Target Beneficiaries

The she codes; community strives to reach all women and girls in Israel with an interest in the technology field. We aim to expose them to the ever-advancing technological industry and help them become the young leaders they can be. she codes; is available to all women, regardless of age, race, religion, or prior level of education.

Mission and Vision

Working towards our goal of 50% female software engineers, we aim to close the gender gap in the Israeli tech industry and reach a significant social change. We aspire to create a social change in the situation of women in the State of Israel, including women from different sectors and peripheral regions. Through helping women integrate into the software development industry, these women will be able to earn better salaries and work under better employment conditions.

Competitive Advantage

We emphasize self-learning and working skills that are similar to those in hi-tech companies. Community members are encouraged to achieve personal and professional growth, not only through learning coding skills, but also by assuming more responsibilities through volunteer work. The heart of she codes; is the organization’s team of nearly 500 volunteers who operate the dozens of branches across Israel, the nationwide events, the organization’s website, and many other significant fields. Additionally, the long term strategy of she codes; is to continue to collaborate actively with major hi-tech companies, such as Google, IBM, and Amazon, to build joint curriculums that will assist both our community members and the hi-tech companies to achieve their goals. Another advantage that comes with this cooperation is the networking opportunities that our participants have, both with one another and with employees at these companies.

Planned Goals and Milestones

We are aiming to open more branches throughout Israel in order to make she codes; accessible to more women across different regions and sectors of the country. We also are striving to launch new programs and curricula to create more opportunities for learning.
