Stage 6: Sustained Scale

The product was launched at the Midlands State University on the 17th of October 2018 after 6 months of research and proof of concept. A successful pilot project was then launched at Runchanyu in the Shurugwi district on the 7th of December 2018.

Problem

Zimbabwe loses 330 000 hectares of tree cover every year as result there is accumulation of greenhouse gases, land degradation through the massive deforestation this in turn has contributed to warmer temperatures causing climate change, this has caused a phenomenon such as Elnino whereby Zimbabwe has experienced little or no rainfall affecting our yearly harvests.

Solution

The Evergreen Solutions developed the seed balls concept which is a low cost and highly efficient forest regeneration method which protects seeds from rodents, insects and animals before germination. Seeds can be dispersed around inaccessible areas such as mountains and areas with rough terrains. The concept lowers the cost of tree planting incredibly compared to the traditional method of digging holes and transporting seedlings.

Target Beneficiaries

Zimbabwe is an agro based economy and is being affected by small scale mining activities that have left pits that pose danger to children and livestock. 80% of Zimbabwe depends on firewood as a source of fuel, with the rate of deforestation few trees will be available for use in the next few years. During winter frost has affected crops due to less tree cover, reforestation and afforestation has will assist tobacco farmers in the firewood they need for curing the golden leaf.

Mission and Vision

To alleviate the carbon footprint, land degradation, deforestation, the burden on the grazing lands through afforestation, reforestation and sowing of grass complemented by educating the community on the significance of vegetating our environments. To combat climate change by offering real time, interactive, low cost environmental friendly solutions.

Competitive Advantage

Currently there is no company making seed balls however there are alternatives such as seedlings and saplings through the forestry commission, Nyaradzo group of companies and the tobacco research board. The seed balls innovation is a low cost and highly efficient forest regeneration method which protects seeds from rodents, insects and animals before germination. Seeds can be dispersed around inaccessible areas such as mountains and areas with rough terrains. The concept lowers the cost of tree planting incredibly compared to the traditional method of digging holes and transporting seedlings. This aggressive method of forest regeneration makes it considerably safe for dry planting as seeds are wrapped in a covering enabling the planting of many seeds at the same time and requires minimum tillage before and during planting.

Planned Goals and Milestones

The firm intends to distribute 20 million seed balls annually and also is in the process of establishing commercial orchards, nurseries and woodlots in the midlands province. The next 5 years will see the business realize revenue from the sale of different fruits, sale of seed balls and sale of carbon credits. Half of the proceeds from the sales will go towards improvement of critical areas such as health, education and provision of bio gas digesters and solar for the communities.
