Due to the rapid spread of COVID-19, a global ventilator shortage has accelerated the need for low cost ventilators in developing countries. We have designed a ventilator that targets COVID-19 patients and can be assembled locally by use of our open source designs. While there is a proliferation of simple ventilator designs, treating COVID-19 patients requires relatively sophisticated ventilation, with both pressure and tidal monitoring in addition to PEEP. Because ventilators are life support equipment, they must have a high quality design, with design controls, thorough review, and a well documented verification plan. Our design is unique from others in that it utilizes a sophisticated ventilation system (involving a high-performance fan, pressure sensors, and a microcontroller), simplifies assembly and manufacturing, and relies on high quality software that will also be open source. As a group of engineers with experience designing life support systems and nuclear power plants, we’re focused on developing designs for multiple low cost, high performance ventilators attuned to the unique challenges and constraints of developing countries. Our open source designs will enable engineers and medical workers in developing countries to build affordable ventilators themselves, with parts available from local supply chains. While we have developed a prototype, we must finalize the design, test it, complete documentation, and prove that our partners around the world can build it.Our plan is to design a low-cost ventilator that is still capable of providing advanced support regimes like Pressure Regulated Volume Control (PRVC) ventilation. To make sure this becomes a reality, we are working with local partners on implementation, supply chain, manufacturing and the regulatory process. Once we’re sure our design works, we will work to bring the ventilator to other communities.
