3 billion people burn biomass like charcoal and firewood inside their homes on local traditional cookstoves to prepare their food each day. This practice harms the families who live in these households and our planet as a whole. This leads to 4 million deaths mostly women and children from illnesses attributable to household air pollution. Black carbon (BC) is the second largest contributor to global warming and emissions from traditional cook stoves are a significant global source of BC.

Powerstove brings smoke-free and off-grid electricity to those who need it by burning 70% less fuel and then the TEG device converts the heat energy to electricity as a source of power to charge phones, power LED bulbs using the built-in USB and DC port providing a convenient source of electricity in remote areas. With its built-in IoT system, Lithium battery and 4 speed fan, it speeds up cooking time, uses much less fuel, lowers carbon emissions and allows monitoring over a cloud server.

Target Beneficiaries

Rural and urban households, roadside restaurants and eateries, schools and refugee camps

Mission and Vision

Innovation Description

Powerstove is a smokeless biomass cookstove that brings off-grid electricity to those who need it. It burns any biomass and then the TEG device converts the heat energy to electricity as a source of power to charge phones, LED lights, TV and radio using the built-in USB and DC port as a convenient source of electricity in remote areas

Powerstove has been designed to use up to 70% less fuel and its built-in battery and four speed fan, speeds up cooking time, using less fuel and lowers carbon emissions. The fan blows oxygen into the chamber and within 1 minute, the fires temperature reaches approximately 1000°C/1832°F, causing the biomass to gasify, and cook 1 liter of water in 3 minutes.

Also, Powerstove is fitted with a cloud-based remote monitoring system for improved cookstoves in rural households.Designed for robust, uninterrupted performance in remote conditions. The Powerstove continuously uploads data on cooking events in a home, giving stakeholders access to use measurements in near real time, without additional field visits. The data is immediately viewable on the Powerstove dashboard, which shows a single day of cooking for a single household, the amount of Co2, biomass, Black Carbon saved, the total kilowatt of electricity generated and most especially allows us to offer Pay-As-You-Use finance model. Powerstove allows users to receive cash payments for their measured use of improved cookstoves and carbon mitigation.

Competitive Advantage

Competitive advantage of Powerstove apart being smokeless and saves 70% less fuel, uses cutting-edge climate science together with a wireless sensors to provide real time data and help rural women with access to results-based financing for their climate stewardship. The heat sensors placed on the Powerstoves detects and uploads data on cooking events on the clean cookstove. The women then received usage-based deposits to their bank accounts based on the carbon emissions they prevented (or “mitigated”) by cooking on the Powerstove.

Also Powerstove, impacts on 7 out of 17 SDG namely: Goal 1: No Poverty, Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, Goal 4: Quality Education, Goal 5: Gender Equality, Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal 13: Climate Action and finally Goal 15: Life on Land. Powerstove remains the only clean cookstove available with built-in System Control Unit that allows users to monitor and control the stove over Wifi, GPRS or SMS.
