PlantumAI is an app that utilizes Artificial Intelligence technology to detect and identify crop diseases on farmers' plants, allowing for immediate analysis of crops without an internet connection.

The foundations of my PlantumAI app's algorithms are Artificial Technology (AI). The algorithm for crop disease detection is a custom Convolutional Neural Network, developed particularly to identify disease on plants, learning critical features from a large dataset of plant pathology images. The app's User Experience (UX) is coded in Java, as all of the farmers had Android-based phones. The server-backend is in Python, dealing with distributing data between the farmers and the university. The crop advice algorithm is a Dense Neural Network, that runs on the backend, as environmental values are pulled from an external API to update the algorithm for individualized users, in real time. Overall, the app utilizes novel technology to provide analysis of crop diseases with a level of accuracy which has not been possible until now. I started to develop PlantumAI to solve this problem, to assist these farmers in sustaining their communities. Using AI technology, we're attempting to help farmers in developing areas optimize their crop yield by analyzing crop diseases straight from the camera, providing direct treatment advice for the crop diseases, and also advising planting and harvesting times based on environmental factors.

Stage 4: Transition to Scale

We are currently testing the app in multiple regions of India and Africa, in an attempt to gauge interest with farmers. We are partnering with local universities in order to teach farms how to utilize the app to decrease their toxic pesticide usage.

Problem

Crop disease is a significant problem because an infection can completely devastate the harvest of a farmer, greatly reducing their profits, along with reducing the amount of food for their area. In this regard, farmers are under constant pressure to achieve a plentiful harvest every year, which results in them using a large number of toxic pesticides. Another big problem is the problem of climate change, which is significantly affecting the techniques that have been standard for many years.

Solution

The first step is that a farmer takes a picture of the affected area on the plants' leaves. If the PlantumAI app detects that a crop disease is present on the plants, after image analysis, it will provide pesticide treatment, along with sending a notification to the local university. It also adds the disease occurrence to the database, in order to track disease progression across an area. The students at the university are also able to investigate the disease further to validate the app.

Target Beneficiaries

Many farmers are actually, themselves, asking to be a part of the initial trials of PlantumAI, as it provides them with immediate value, in the form of easier disease detection, and faster analysis of crops. PlantumAI provides value for the farmers' data, protecting their crops from disease and optimizing their crop yield, while incentivizing continued assistance from the local university by helping in the students' education.

Mission and Vision

A version of PlantumAI will be released publically, to allow people across the world to identify their crop diseases. Another aspect being looked into is partnering with other philanthropic organizations, to expand crop growth knowledge, and increase exposure for PlantumAI, so more farmers use it to protect their crops from disease. Overall, we hope to increase the number of farms using PlantumAI, to help even more people and communities across the world.

Again, the algorithm is completely proprietary, and it is utilized to get state-of-the-art analysis on plant pathological images. Most importantly, it can run locally on the device without an internet connection. The UX makes it simple for farmers to utilize the app, and with our varied connections, we are able to test and implement new ideas fast.

The Team Behind the Innovation

The lead of this project is currently still in high school, and is still working to assist farmers, like his family members, make sure that their crops are protected from disease.
