Elementary-aged children underrepresented in children’s literature are fighting for dual competency when they read. The first struggle is to gain understanding of the literacy standards of the represented culture. The second effort is to conceptualize the mores of the represented culture. When something is printed it is seen as a definitive authority, so many of the young readers are internalizing what they see in these books as universal definitions and ideals of culture and beauty.
We believe that for underrepresented introductory readers, what will help their process is if they are provided literature with food, places, people and narratives they recognize. Our goal is to make art and literature accessible to children who are rarely represented in the children’s book publishing industry, by creating books that they can relate to and learn from.
We serve readers in countries affected by low literacy rates and underrepresented cultures.
Mission and Vision
One Moore Book is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that encourages reading among children of countries with low literacy rates and underrepresented cultures by publishing culturally relevant books that speak to their truths, and by creating bookstores and reading corners that serve their communities.
We partner with writers and illustrators from the underrepresented groups to create our books and educational materials.
