Ogaan has developed a web application and mobile application that enables an employer to post a vacancy job seekers are able to give their information of their education and work experience. The types of vacancies posted are inclusive of both the formal and informal sector. In both, the prospective employer and employee are able to be matched on the platform according to the needs of the employer and the qualifications of the prospective employee. By signing up and providing details about experience and interest, the platform will provide a job seeker with job vacancies that they already qualify for. The type of jobs will range from internships and part-time jobs to full-time employment possibilities. There is also an informal jobs section of the app where people are able to post and apply for jobs in the informal sector. By bringing these two worlds together, that is: workers and employers, a user is able to tap into a space of endless possibilities for their future.

Problem

As the number of students who are pursuing higher education increases in Africa, the level of unemployment is doing the same. Two hundred million people in Africa are currently unemployed. In Kenyan alone, over 7 million people are unemployed. 75% of Kenya’s population is also under the age of 30 years and 83% of this demographic interacts with the informal sector either temporarily or permanently. This creates a lot of unknowns about what the job market looks like and where to look for jobs.

Solution

Kenya’s smart phone penetration is now almost at 100% from about 44% in 2016. The three ways to ease the job challenge in the Africa are ; create new jobs, improve productivity and earnings of jobs in the informal sector and help connect the right people to the right jobs. Ogaan has set out to do two out of those three things, which area; connecting the right people to the right jobs and elevating the informal sector by setting a minimum rate for jobs posted on our platform.

Target Beneficiaries

Ogaan benefits workers in the formal and the informal sectors and employers in the formal sector. The job seekers of jobs in the formal sector are able to view and apply for jobs they are qualified for while indulging in temporary work in the informal sector. This will keep them active and help them earn some money while waiting for better opportunities. Meanwhile, the people seeking work in the informal sector are able to view jobs and be connected to them in a much easier transparent way.
