A recent article by Harvard Business Review titled, "Three Elements of a Successful Platform Strategy, perfectly describes the current space that Niajiri is playing in, as relates to three building blocks of a platform strategy. The Toolbox: As Niajiri platform we have plug ins that allows us to work with others to provide training to the youth such as our ongoing partnership with Deeper Signals where we make accessible technology driven assessments around personality and Leap Learning Labs where we access tutorials that have been designed specifically to train entrepreneurship in the African market. The Magnet: Working on perfecting the carrot(i.e opportunities available on the platform such as portfolio building, assessment, feedback, soft skills curriculum, tools, etc), we on board users and take them through our "Niajiri Journey". The Matchmaker: We are able to use machine learning and data to map out talent in the platform to relevant job opportunities in the market place.

Problem

The East Africa Inter University Council Report of 2014 notes that of the estimated 900,000 Tanzanian youth entering the job market, 6 out of 10 do not have job ready market skills. In addition a publication by Kelvin M. Mwita which is in the International Journal of Human Resources Studies (2018, Volume 8. No.2) notes that 56.6% of Human Resources Practitioners believe that Tanzanian graduates are not competent to compete for jobs in the East African market.

Solution

Using machine learning and gamification, we envision Niajiri as the tool that will have an impact to over 2.5M youth across Africa over the next 5 years through either the use of our tools (CVs, contextualised assessments), access to our curated online curriculum or matched to opportunities. We seek to be the employability platform that youth access to gain employability skills and the go to platform for employers when it comes to talent acquisition and development in Africa.

Target Beneficiaries

Our innovation targets youth who are looking to build their skills set so that they can be in a position to secure opportunities either in the form of employment or self employment. Currently 67% of our 12,000 users are youth aged between 18 -24 years old who are further subdivided into ; -youth in colleges, universities and VETS, -those who have graduated and seeking opportunities and -those seeking continuous learning opportunities.

Mission and Vision

With over 226M youth (15 - 24 years old) across Africa and the figure estimated to increase by 42% by 2030, there is a correlation to the economic prosperity of the continent if this group is not empowered with the right skills and tools. Our mission is to be the employability platform that youth access to gain skills and the go to platform for employers when it comes to talent acquisition and development in Africa.

Competitive Advantage

1.Deliver interactive and educational learning content to users in a self paced format through various media such as audio, video, pdfs and presentation that ensures maximum engagement and retention. 2. Accessible research based and data driven employability curriculum and assessments. With integrations to partners such as Deeper Signals that delivers technology enabled evidence based assessments and Leap Learning Labs , we ensure that our users have access to top notch content. On a further note, we have also in consultation a Learning Experience Designer who has worked before in building curriculum for institutions such as the Africa Leadership University designing our Niajiri Curriculum which will be made accessible to all users. 3. Bridge the existing skills gap through our engaging “Niajiri Journey” where we showcase progress of the users through their various engagements on the platform. 4. An integrated email and sms online feedback system

Planned Goals and Milestones

Our target is 500,000 university, and VET students to get access to our engaging online content. The ongoing COVID-19 has left the education sector grappling with school closures across the globe. Tanzania has recently extended indefinitely school closures and we would like to make accessible our employability skills content to youth. It is noted that 67.8% of Tanzanians access internet through mobile devices making our solution feasible as 72.48% of our users access through a mobile device.
