My Green Butler is a sustainability management system designed for tourist accommodation, and it can also be applied to hospitals, offices and households. It combines intelligent systems to monitor and measure resource use, inside temperature, outside weather conditions and forecasts. It also logs guest profiles. The monitoring enables managers to set saving targets for electricity, gas, firewood, fuel and water. Hourly reports provide comparison feedback against targets and best previous performance of the building. Managers receive alerts about changing weather conditions so they can take pre-emptive action to save resources. For guests the system provides adaptive behaviour advice personalised to each individual visitor and triggered by usage and weather conditions. Advice encourages use of natural ventilation and the responsible use of control systems. Guests are educated by receiving eco-feedback on their individual guest room/apartment performance against the targets and best previous guests. Carbon emissions are compared to driving distance to increase awareness of consequences. These advisory messaged are personalised by the host so they reflects the unique characteristics of the building and its adaptive options. Guests learn from web app, digital screens, in-room TV channel, paper reports and face to face staff demonstrations. Guests successfully become participants in what becomes a gamified conserving process.

Stage 4: Transition to Scale

We have established partnership with City of Sydney, Europe’s leading theme park and the best hotel group in northern England where we are conducting trials at hotels, resorts and smaller accommodation. Won Banksia Foundation's Award 2018.

Problem

Depletion of natural resources and increasing GHG emissions requires tourism, the world’s largest industry, to urgently cut energy use. But the global population growth, tourism expansion (+7% pa) and extreme weather events mean we cannot rely solely on eco-efficient technologies and renewable energy to help us achieve the -70% carbon reduction targets by 2030. More must be done to help people self-regulate their energy use, a resource largely invisible except through monthly bills after use.

Solution

My Green Butler helps people conserve resources. Resource use is made transparent by ‘real time’ Triple Line Performance feedback showing savings target saving and best performers. It provides green advice to guide users on suitable adaptive behaviours for thermal comfort using natural ventilation rather than energy, or alerts to turn off/on equipment at optimal times based on outside weather conditions and forecast changes. It provides personalise itineraries encouraging low carbon mobility.

Target Beneficiaries

The innovation helps managers and staff at tourist accommodation by reducing energy (water and waste). It increases the skills of staff to operate equipment and learn natural ventilation benefit. Guests learn new ways to save energy and see results. The system can be applied to hospitals, offices and households using the same principle of pre-emptive conserving behaviour. Extreme weather events will require improved skills to adapt especially under the threat of blackouts due to higher demand.

Mission and Vision

My Green Butler helps tourism save millions of kWh of energy and litres of water. It will play a Climate Change Adaption (SDG 13) role to help mankind meet its Paris Agreement obligations. We recognise that people, especially the old and vulnerable, and managers need advice on how best to conserve and adapt in a changing climate. Our system helps people use fewer resources and cut carbon as they learn new skills (SDG4) to apply action at the right time so increasing their resilience.

Competitive Advantage

1. My Green Butler combines hard technology (monitoring) with social technology (accommodation staff and guests working together the conserve) so that people can successfully conserve resources and learn skills to better use the eco-efficient technologies available. 2.Our innovation uses persuasive communication that is personalised for each property, to reflect their unique characteristics and facilities, and to each guest type (families, couples, accessible, dietary requirements) making it more effective. 3. The Triple Line Performance feedback teaches managers how to set saving targets, comparing targets with actual use and identified best performing days/guests. 4. My Green Butler uses a multi-channel approach to communicate with guests making it more impactful. 5.The system permits personalisation of advice, messages and the way they are delivered. 6. Hardware is a simply ‘plug in and play’ Internet of Things format. 7. Provide conserving training to upskill managers and staff.

Planned Goals and Milestones

We are conducting pilot projects at tourist accommodation located in Europe’s largest theme park attraction. We are now in talks with the leading Online Travel Agent to develop a version for their marketplace and reach 600,000 accommodation providers. We are also working with MEWS to offer the system to their reservation management system customers. Our aim is to create an application which accommodation firms give their guests at check-out for use at home to save energy and learn new skills.

The Team Behind the Innovation

Our team is a family literally! Dr. Christopher Warren conducted his PhD to research our prototype so that we have scientific evidence of its impacts and results. He applied his marketing background to promote the system and train users. Sophie Warren, award winning hospitality manager, provides practical implementation feedback as she applies the system daily to visiting guests. Maxwell Warren assists with developing the usability of the system and conducting research.
