Innovative devices locally designed, fabricated and Installed by rural artisans for water and space heating in mountain households. Water and space heating systems were developed to address round the year requirement of mountain communities.
Solar systems are fabricated on wood frame. Galvanized iron (GI) sheet is absorber and Aluminium alloy coil (3.75-4.0 cm internal diameter) with inlet and out let connection hold water for heating. On the front illuminated side of the absorber sheet is fixed with aluminium water coil with reducers (2.5 cm) to outlet and inlet of water protruding through the wood frame for cold water and hot water connections. Absorber sheet and aluminium water coil is coated with black paint having specific amendment which increased efficiency of solar energy absorption. At the top of coil system is glazed with window glass (4mm). Panel is installed at 45o angel on the roof top. System coil hold 18.0 liters of water and is heated to 70-80oC within 30-45 minute of solar illumination (100-120 liters/day). This system cost $170. Solar space heating system is same as that of solar water heating system without water coil. The system is fixed on south facing wall of the living room as retrofit in constructed houses or can be building integrated system (BIS) in new construction like window with air went at the lower and upper end. On account of limited resources the mountain areas are facing grave energy crisis and high dependence on fuel wood poses a potential threat to the ecology, health of household inmates and involve women drudgery in fuel wood/dung collection. Collectively water and space heating was assessed to consume more than 50% of fuel wood/dung which consume maximum time of women in collection. Burning of fuel wood/ dung increases indoor pollution and carbon emission with forests degradation.
: Fuel wood/dung. This saving is estimated to reduce 4.9 MT of carbon emission/annum/household (average size 5 members). Women saved travelling of 200 KM and 200 hours/annum. These systems were of high efficiency, cost effective and easy to maintain.
Mountain households in cold regions with providing ready to install system is the main plan. If there is scope for training of rural artisan for fabrication of system in the region or area can also be taken up to set up enterprise for extension of activity on franchisee basis. Households prefer to have ready to install system and is also preferred to fabricate in a central facility which is cost effective.
Mission and Vision
In developing these two solar systems. Efficient use of traditional fuel such as fuel wood and dung will reduce household emission with direct contribution to global agenda of mitigation. Efficient use of fuel wood will not only save trees but help in biodiversity conservation.
Commercially available solar water heating systems fail in the mountain regions because of technical, financial, supply chain and awareness regions. However, there is no solar space heating system available in the market and all new and being demonstrated for the first time. Mountain solar water heating system requires 1.5-2.0 2m for installation which is 50% less with dual provision of filling (manual and piped) keeping in view the availability of supply. Systems work efficiently in subzero conditions with provisions of night drainage of water to prevent freezing. System is more efficient in terms of water heating and free of complicated post installation maintenance. Systems are quite cost effective. Successful demonstration of the artisan fabricated mountain solar water and space heating systems in last 2 years in cold deserts of Ladakh and high altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh in India provided very successful technology to meet the water and space heating requirement.
Planned Goals and Milestones
Proposing to extend this technology across the Indian Himalayan Region. Proposal was developed to install 5000 mountain solar water heating system across four state namely Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, J&K and Arunachal Pradesh. Proposal is submitted for National Mission of Himalayan Studies for funding and is under evaluation. At the same time efforts are in progress to establish local group/company to fabricate the system for sale and is subject to availability of finance.

The Team Behind the Innovation
HRG team is working to address needs of mountain communities for the last two decades. Team possess good skills and capabilities for solving the difficult problems of forest dependent communities in difficult mountain areas. Team members were recognized from time to time through awards and recognitions for innovations and solutions to solve the everyday problems with S&T inputs. Members also work in different committees to design policy and solutions for community needs.
