How does your innovation work?
The Mobile Solar Pump is an irrigation tool that lifts water from surface sources like canal, rivers and lakes using solar energy to irrigate fields. The pump is completely free and requires minimal maintenance and has theoritically 20 to 25 years life time. The pump comes provides and exceptional performance capacity of up to 60 cubic meters per hour using only a 1.5 horse power system. The revolutional design of the pump provides ease of mobility and operation giving the chance for farmers to share the same unit that can serve up to 15 acres.

Stage 4: Transition to Scale

The innovation has been built, tested and operated in actual operation conditions in several villages in Upper Egypt. Development of this design has taken about one and half years starting from 2015 to late 2016.

Problem

The Egyptian government has started a five-year plan to phase out energy subsidies. Fossil fuel prices have soared in the last two year and will continue. Farmers suffer to get diesel for their pumps as they are banned to get diesel in regular bottles. They have to get it from the black market at double the price and sometimes they cannot get it. This situation increased the pressure on poor farmers and has depreciated their income considerably.

Solution

SunCity has managed to develop a revolution design of a Mobile Solar Pump that has the capacity of pumping up to 60 cubic meters of water per hour using only a 1.5 hp solar and pump system. The pump comes in an innovative user-friendly and mobile package that can be easily toed by a donkey, horse or tractor. Anyone can easily operate the pump in 10 minutes. The pump can serve more than 15 acres at zero operating cost.

Target Beneficiaries

Egypt has around 5 million farmer who own less than one acre and depend on diesel pumps for irrigation. 80% of these farmers use surface water for irrigation according to FAO. Typically, most farmers in Egypt use diesel pumps for irrigation. The estimate for those small farmers world-wide is about 500 millions who either use diesel pumps for irrigation or depend on seasonal rainfall.

Mission and Vision

For each 1000 unit we build and sell annually there will be: 1- 7 to 10 permenenat green jobs created 2- 24 thousand tons of CO2 will be cut 3- Savings of more than 6 million dollar of operating costs to small farmers 4- Serve up to 10,000 small farmers helping them to grow more food for less.

Competitive Advantage

We are creating an alternative to convential diesel pumps that has zero operating costs, provide comperaable performance, and can be easily operated and transported. This compact 1.5 hp solar pump can lift up to 60 cubic meters of water per hour and can serve 15 acres. The payback ranges between 1 and 2.5 years based on the size of land it serves and the prices of diesel.

Planned Goals and Milestones

Building partnerships with local startups or distributors in Africa, Latin America and Asia to disseminate the technology across these markets with support of local players who understand the market well.
Move from testing and piloting on a local level to expansion strategy to reach more countries beyond our local boarders. This will be implemented through a growth strategy that features partnerships across other countries and establishment of a supply chain channel.

The Team Behind the Innovation

The founding team has the both the technical and the business skills to turn this innovative idea into a successful business. Ahmed, holds master of sustainable development and possess a record of manufacturing expertise. He is a certified person to design and install solar photovoltaics systems and solar water pumping stations. Mohamed, is a former lawyer and a customer service personnel. He will serve as the legal advisor for the company in addition to his role as customer service support.
