Learning Clubs is an integrated, evidence-based caregiver education program that addresses multiple major risk factors, including: maternal nutrition, infant health and development, gender-based violence and empowerment and maternal mental health to optimal early childhood development. Each of the program's 19 community-based facilitated group sessions provide mothers, fathers, and grandparents with access to learning activities, group interaction, educational DVDs, and social support throughout the first 1000 days of a child's development. Stage 3: Proof of Concept

Risks continue in early infancy: a third of mothers have mental disorders, 22% of infants are moderately or severely anemic and 7.4% are stunted. Six-month-old infants of mothers with common mental disorders in pregnancy have infant cognitive development scores significantly lower than infants of mothers without common mental disorders. To date, interventions in these settings have focused on one or two of these risks, and outcomes for child development have been only partially effective. Project collaborators include the Jean Hailes Research Unit, Australia’s Monash University and the Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne.
