Problem

Almost one out of every four Thai people is a rice farmer, an astounding 17 million rice farmers in a country of 70 million people. Despite Thailand being the world's number one rice exporter, Thai rice farmers are among the poorest in the world, earning a net income of less than $0.40/day, 6 times below the poverty line. Despite interventions from the Government and NGOs, Thai rice farmers debt has tripled over the past 10 years. With an average age of almost 60 years old the future is bleak.

Solution

Siam Organic increases rice farmer income by partnering with farmers and cooperatives to grow, mill, and package Jasberry rice. We guarantee Jasberry rice farmers a purchase PRICE up to 200% more than they would otherwise receive for commodity rice. We also provide farmers with crucial access to credit, organic fertilizer, improved seeds, organic certification, and training to increase their YIELD and reduce their COST. We also invest in R&D to create higher-value products.

Target Beneficiaries

We serve small-scale farmers in the drought-prone and impoverished northeastern part of Thailand. The farmers often have only secondary education, and farming is their sole source of income. Most of our farmers are female, including the leadership in our cooperatives. The farmers typically marry with 3 children per household. Due to losses associated with farming commodity rice, many young adults leave rural areas to find labor in cities. We plan to expand to serve small-scale farmers worldwide.

Mission and Vision

We want to see a world where farmers are no longer caught in vicious cycle of poverty, a world where farmers are empowered to produce nutritious and affordable staple food for consumers worldwide.

Competitive Advantage

Jasberry rice is simply, from a nutritional standpoint, the world's healthiest rice. It's only being grown in a small part in Thailand at the moment and it's impossible to replicate in other parts of the world without thorough knowledge transfer and training. It's also affordable for global consumers as a staple food which forms a fundamental part of their healthy daily diet.

Planned Goals and Milestones

We are currently creating new value-added products from Jasberry rice such as gluten-free superfood pasta and bread. Our goal is to reach consumers in 5 new countries in 2019 and expanding the farmers' families we work with from 2,500 families to 20,000 families, lifting 100,000 farmers out of poverty in the process. We need funding to make this happen as our processing facility is 100% owned by farmers and they don't have access to financing. It's crucial now that we aim to be in Walmart.

The Team Behind the Innovation

Siam Organic has two Thai co-founders, Neil and Palmmy. Neil graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering and Economics. Palmmy worked in finance. They partnered up to design a social business model that eliminates poverty among farmers in a financially sustainable way. In 2016, they were joined by Clint, who had finished three years as a Program Manager with One Acre Fund in Rwanda, managing training for over 14,000 Rwandan farmers.
