Empowering rural entrepreneurs and communities to build safe, affordable homes at scale.

Build up Nepal is a social enterprise that provides rural entrepreneurs and communities with low-cost machines, training and support to build safe, affordable homes and resilient incomes. Our micro-enterprise model establishes each enterprise as a long-term sustainable economic engine within each community, building safe homes, creating jobs and reducing CO2 over the long-term.

Stage 5: Scaling

Founded in 2015, the Build up Nepal model has long-term impact and scalability at its core. We have supported 250 entrepreneurs to build 4500 homes, creating 2500 jobs and saving 20,610 tons CO2, now scaling the model across Nepal and South Asia.

Problem

Millions of families in rural Nepal suffer from poor, unsanitary housing, poverty and lack of jobs. The situation worsened after the 2015 earthquakes and 2019 floods, destroying 800,000+ homes. Low-income families are stuck in a vicious housing-poverty-cycle and lack income, skill and technology to build safe, affordable homes. Crowded, unsanitary housing disproportionately affects women, vulnerable groups, and communities facing spread of COVID-19.

Solution

Our micro-enterprise model provides driven micro-entrepreneurs with low-cost machines, training and support to establish long-term sustainable construction enterprises. Using our innovative Interlocking Brick technology eco-friendly bricks can be produced using local materials. Each enterprise ignites a sustainable economic engine within the community, building 15 new homes yearly, creating 12 full time jobs and reducing 70-ton of CO2 year-on-year.

Target Beneficiaries

Our primary beneficiaries are rural women, youth and men as entrepreneurs, brick-makers and masons. Low-income families gain new, safe homes, jobs and more resilient communities. We have a specific focus on women and youth as entrepreneurs this opens the door for others in the same group to work in construction.

Mission and Vision

Poor rural families dream to live in a brick house. However, currently brick houses are unaffordable and a major climate issue (responsible for 2.7% of CO2 emissions globally). Build up Nepal’s mission is to make brick-houses eco-friendly and affordable for poor rural families.

Competitive Advantage

In contrast to traditional development projects our model effectively leverages private sector investment and innovative technology to create secure jobs, affordable housing and sustainable enterprises at scale. Our customised machines can operate off grid using local materials ideally suited to rural communities. Our Interlocking Brick technology uses sand and soil as core materials to build disaster resistant and affordable houses, providing a viable and innovative solution to the urgent gap in safe, affordable housing in Nepal and Asia. The enterprises are owned by local micro-entrepreneurs, ensuring a strong incentive to build, sustain and grow. As a result, 80% of our enterprises to date continue to build thousands of new homes and sustain thousands of jobs year-on-year.

Planned Goals and Milestones

Our immediate goal is to scale the model and establish it as a mainstream construction material across Nepal. Our medium-term goal (by 2025), is to establish 600 new enterprises with a specific focus on women, youth and vulnerable groups. This will result in 6600 long term jobs, 25,000 affordable homes, and a reduction of 115,000 tons of CO2 and more resilient communities. We are targeting SDGs 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13, with a specific focus on SDGs 1, 8 and 13.
