There is a huge difference in the use of digital information and ICT technologies by the fisher community in India. Fisher men loose their life while they are in the ocean due to different reasons which include natural as well as man made disasters. Some of these can be avoided if they are able to use the existing technologies for communication as well as to get information and alerts at the right time.
In this work, we came up with a sustainable social change model which help fisher community. Our research prove that there is a huge requirement to come up with a social change approach and we designed the model based on the frequent communication with the fisher community in Kerala, India. Our model helps to bring down the digital gap exist in the community and will empower them to use the ICT solution to become more resilient during the disasters and hazards the community face.
Direct beneficiaries are the fisher men and their family, the boat owners, the local government bodies. It indirectly helps the fish market workers, the sellers as well.
Mission and Vision
Mission is to implement this social change model we developed to 10 fishing villages in Kerala. For that we need to get ladies and young stairs in the community to take part in our training. We need to develop mobile apps to address their requirements. We need to make the community use the system. Our vision is to expand this solution to all the fishing villages across the state and then with the learning from this we want to deploy this in the rest of the fishing villages across India.
We are mainly focusing on the fisher community in India. Fisher community in India is completely detached from the other communities in many aspects. The fisher community focus mainly on the sea fishing occupation.
Planned Goals and Milestones
We want to implement it in the few fishing villages across kerala and based on the changes we can make it the community, we would like to expand it to more villages in large scale. We may have to work with each village to gradually improve their knowledge and experience with the ICT technology.
