We offer affordable and eco-friendly latrines (EcoTETO) that facilitate segregation, containment, emptying, and re-use of waste. We also offer toilet seats that allow disabled and elderly people to use pit latrines in rural areas for inclusion of all

ECOTETO EcoTeto or Ecological Temaco Toilet is an improved which:  prevents contamination of water bodies  breaks contact between humans and feces  prevents feces exposure to insects and other vectors  prevents unpleasant odor  is well constructed, safe and, and it contains an easy-to-clean slab. EcoTeto is environmental friendly in such that it protects and conserves water because it reuses water from bathrooms. This latrine can be constructed (used) in cities, towns as well as villages and it has an added advantage of not requiring deep digs. This makes EcoTeto better especially in Northern and Western regions of Rwanda where one cannot dig a hole greater than one metre because of volcanic rocks. EcoTeto is also preferable to regions with underground water located in few metres like Nyanza district. There are two types of EcoTeto: - DRY: which does not use water to move human waste to concrete rings. On the contrary, the slab is directly connected to the ring cover and it allows excreta to go straight in the pit. - WET: which has a pipe connecting the concrete ring with the slab. This type of latrine uses water to move feces from the squirting pan to the concrete ring. DESIGNED CHAIR FOR OLD AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY This Toilet chair is not fixed on the slab, but can be used on any type of the toilet by simply placing it on the top of the slab.

Stage 4: Transition to Scale

We designed our EcoTETO and won a tender of implementation of ISUKU IWACU, a USAID-Funded Project, in two Districts(1652 toilets). We designed and produced prototypes of our Toilet Seat and are now supplying 550 chairs

Problem

In Rwanda, a lot has been done in terms of inclusion in this area. In urban places, various sanitation needs for different categories are mostly catered for. The Government of Rwanda has made significant strides in terms of ensuring access to sanitation in rural areas, but inclusion is yet to be catered for. Also, in Rwanda there is a considerable number of households who either do not have access to sanitation or have unimproved sanitation. Rwanda's landscape does not always allow digging

Solution

We came up with affordable and eco-friendly latrines (EcoTETO) that facilitate segregation, containment, emptying, and re-use of waste and whose slab is located outside the toilet room. For people wit disability and elderly people who live in rural areas where pit latrines are commonly used, we designed and produced toilet seats that allow them to relieve themselves with ease.

Target Beneficiaries

Priority will be given to households in Rwanda living in 13 districts with Permanent poverty dynamics as per EICV 5 (Nyamagabe, Nyamasheke, Burera, Nyagatare, Gicumbi, Gatsibo, Karongi, Rubavu, Ngororero, Ruhango, Gisagara, Nyaruguru, Gatsibo), which do not have access to sanitation, as well as all households in those Districts who do not yet have access to improved sanitation as well as all people with disability and elderly people who do not have modern toilets and still use pit latrines.

Mission and Vision

Mission: Provide the best quality of affordable, eco-friendly and inclusive sanitation solutions to rural area inhabitants Vision: Become the continental source and manager of the whole sanitation value chain

Competitive Advantage

Since we started business we continuously vied for best quality and we have so far not yet been outraced. For our sanitation products, we are the very first company proposing eco-friendly latrines with the full value chain services, that integrate households’ involvement and reuse of treated faecal sludge. We are the very first company to propose to the market sanitation solutions for disabled and elderly people in Rwanda. Being the first movers on the market, our products are already known, tested and liked. We're in various partnership agreements that allows to outperform new comers. For example for our Toilet Seat, negotiations are ongoing for it to be included on the list of good purchasable in pharmacies and available on medical insurance schemes. We started with NGOs (USAID, World Vision, SNV, World Vision) present on the whole continent and the issue is the same in other countries. It will be easier for us to scale up through our current partners.

Planned Goals and Milestones

implementation of our project in Rwanda is the first phase. We have so far tested, now we will scale up to the whole country. Afterwards we will expand to other neighboring cities of DRC and Burundi. This will be a business initiative, for profit. We will require beneficiaries contribution. For this in-country expansion phase, in order to ensure affordability of our products (that we sell to people living in poverty) we are seeking a grant or equity having a few conditions/requirements.
