Modernizing Cashew growing and Processing for Export

At best 100 trees per hectare is achieved using current techniques. Our strategy uses less land area per tree, so that we are able to achieve more than 500 trees per hectare. The yield per tree from our strategy is similar to current techniques. However, we are able to put more trees per hectare.

Stage 3: Proof of Concept

We are at the stage where we need to implement high density cashew growing with drip irrigation support on 500 hectare acquired. We are also accepting outgrower farmers to be supported to grow cashew and sell back to us for processing and export

Problem

§Africa grows more than half of world Cashew output with West Africa dominating through small holder farms that are not profitable and cannot attract funding
§Last year Ghana exported over $900 million worth of raw Cashew nuts
§All of Africa process about 8% of total cashew produced
§Kete-Krachi Farms is set up to produce Cashew using modern techniques and Process for Export

}

Solution

§High Density Cashew Growing
§Soybean inter-cropping to optimize the use of land and improve cashflow
§600 Bee colonies for Pollination
§Drip irrigation
§Cashew Nut Processing for export
§2000 Out-grower farmers supported and buying back their yield for Processing and export
§ORGANIC, FSC, ISO Certifications

Target Beneficiaries

2000 small holder farmers will benefit from an out-grower scheme to supplement their income by growing cashew and selling to Kete-Krachi Farms for Processing and export. We estimate that this business will impact over 500,000 people directly and indirectly through providing added services like catering, cleaning and transport services.

Mission and Vision

Developing innovative agricultural recipes through continuous learning and application of modern techniques

Competitive Advantage

§Kete Krachi Farms Ltd is in competition with other cashew farming and processing firms. However, a combination of factors gives us a competitive advantage in the cashew growing industry.
•Growing more Cashew per hectare than the competition using modern high density growing techniques
•This is made possible by drip irrigation
§Further increases in output by using Bees for pollination
§Cashflow in year 1 growing Soybean as inter-crop

Planned Goals and Milestones

Our next set of activities include land preparation and installing drip irrigation to support 128000 tress and Soybean. We also will be developing and distributing 1,000,000 trees to 2000 farmers to grow cashew to supplement their household income.
