In low developed countries, farming is the main source of livelihood yet 50% of produce mainly fruits and vegetables are lost in the post-harvest handling, storage and distribution. In Uganda, over 7million households engaged in horticulture are affected, with a household losing over $10,000 annually. We designed Fruiti-Cycle, an electric motorized tricycle mounted with a refrigerated storage unit for conveniently distributing fresh fruits and vegetables, while reducing the 50% loses to 10%.
How does your innovation work?
Fruiti-Cycle uses manual peddling energy to generate electricity then converts it up to 50km/hr motorized system. This energy allows a famer to carry 5 times more produce (up to 300kg ) every time than the current normal bicycles with 60kg carrying capacity. The energy also allows a farmer to reach far markets in a radius of 100km without getting exhausted unlike the normal bicycles that can only travel as far as 30km before a farmer gets very exhausted. Unlike other motor tricycles in the market, Fruiti-Cycle has a refrigerated storage unit which uses evaporative cooling system powered by solar to prolong the shelf-life of the produce during distribution and to reduce mechanical damages due to poor packaging. The storage unit is also detachable to be used within the market by market vendors to preserve their produce up to five days, significantly reducing the total post-harvest losses from 50% to only 10%. watch video pitch here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGIad3SV9Ww)

Stage 2: Research & Development

As a team of Makerere University students and fresh graduates, we saved some funds to support the production of the first prototype. To date it has been tested with 6 end users in 3 different markets within Kampala, to validate the need, users’ ability and willingness to pay for the product. We have gathered feedback regarding the price of the product, size of the refrigerated storage unit, design of the whole unit, color and we are now using these feedback to work on the second iterated product. Since we could not depend on our savings for research and development, during the same testing period we have also participated in different challenges and competitions to raise funds, get exposure and publicity for our Idea. We are now leveraging on the mentorship, users feedback and using the awards totaling to $19,000 to do more research and develop the second prototype which can then be piloted with a larger number of end users by end of 2016.
Our product is currently at Banda Market in one of the suburbs in Kampala City, Uganda being tested by the 7th and 8th end user (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ubq_csbZdQ).
We have a Minimal Viable Product and we have tested with end users. After completion of the second improved prototype, we shall pilot it in selected places within the central region of Uganda to validate and measure its impact as we also do need assessment studies.

Planned Goals and Milestones

Our product currently cost $1,200, which is three times less expensive than the current motor-tricycles in the market (through more research and prototype iteration, we shall reduce the total cost to make it more affordable for a farmer). We have already partnered with Uganda National Agricultural Advisory Services as an implementation partner. We are leveraging on their strong relationship with Uganda Famers Associations, Farmers community SACCO groups and market vendors association as our channel to reach the end users. Our revenue streams shall be through partnership with Microfinance organizations to deliver our products to groups of farmers and groups of market vendors through loan schemes with return on investment in the first year. Through promotions, community outreaches and radio/Television marketing, we shall build a strong brand. In the middle term we shall expand our sales and use of innovation across Africa, Asia and South America through franchising and licensing model.
With the feedback got from end-users from testing the first prototype and current $19,000 raised from awards and grants, we shall complete the development of our second prototype (fully functional) by end of October/2016. We shall then pilot our innovation at selected areas within Kampala with more end users on achieving our fundraising target of $50,000 by end of 2016
