Innovation Description

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) kills 130,000 women a year, primarily in low-income countries, even though it is treatable. Uterine balloon tamponades are the standard-of-care in the US but are single-use and cost over 400 USD a piece. The tested and piloted ESM-UBT can be assembled from materials available in developing countries (a condom, catheter and syringe and one-way valve) at ultra-low cost (less than $5 USD). The ESM-UBT is an effective PPH intervention for resource-limited health settings.
