At the core of the Envirofit Pay-As-You-Cook model is Envirofit’s SmartMeter technology, which uses flow metering to monitor and dispense fuel. The meter is designed to fit on existing LPG cylinders, turning a standard cylinder into a smart device, so it can quickly and easily be integrated into the existing LPG supply chain. The meter is GPS enabled and tamperproof to prevent illegal and dangerous unauthorized refilling. The SmartMeter uses IoT technology to communicate through the local cellular network with a central database which contains the payment history for all customers. After payment is made, a signal is sent to the meter authorizing it to release the amount of fuel purchased. By measuring how much fuel is dispensed, the SmartMeter also calculates how much fuel remains. This information is both displayed to the customer and transmitted to the central database, allowing for cost efficient delivery plans to be made. SEE LESS
Stage 4: Transition to Scale
Envirofit completed pilots in Kenya and Ghana in 2017 and has successfully launched commercially in Kenya in 2018 and aiming to be in 50,000 households across Nairobi by 2019 and open up new operations in Rwanda, Uganda, India, and Guatemala by 2020.

Funds Raised to Date
Open fire cooking represents the world’s largest environmental public health challenge, contributing to climate change, deforestation, disability and mortality. Families currently cooking with biomass aspire to cook with gas but face price and availability barriers that prevent them from accessing it. Despite LPG being cleaner, safer and more reliable, families can pay as much as 62% more to cook with charcoal but can’t pay for the upfront cost of buying LPG in bulk.
Envirofit developed the SmartGas Service to make gas more accessible, affordable, and safe to use. Customers enroll in the SmartGas service. Envirofit service technicians then safely install a gas cylinder with a SmartMeter in their home. Customers are then able to use mobile money to pay for gas in daily amounts. The SmartMeter dispenses fuel and turns off when credit is spent. When the cylinder is low, Envirofit is notified and a customer care agent schedules the next cylinder delivery.
In emerging markets there are 174 million charcoal users who purchase fuel and 478 million families who purchase wood fuel. $20 Billion was spent on cooking fuels in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2010 and is projected to grow to $47Billion by 2020. Customers are the lower income urban families that currently cook with charcoal. SmartGas customers are families living in poor urban densely crowded communities and are day laborers with a combined family income of $200-350 a month which is earned daily.
Mission and Vision
Envirofit's mission is to innovate and scale technology solutions to create energy access for the next billion. Our vision is that everyone has equal access to affordable energy products that improve their lives, their community, their economy, and the environment.
Cylinders are mostly purchased from illegal fillers in their neighborhood that supply partially filled cylinders that are often unsafe. SmartGas is a welcome change to the LPG industry to combat these illegal practices. Envirofit has a first mover advantage and is the first company to commercially launch a LPG SmartMeter and own the entire value chain to deliver gas to customers. Envirofit’s SmartMeter has a high accuracy reading and features patent-pending features that are not available in other LPG meters. Unlike the competition, Envirofit is a global muli-national industry leader with over a decade of experience and global reach to quickly and easily introduce and scale solutions.
Planned Goals and Milestones
Over the next 3 years Envirofit aims to make SmartGas the norm as opposed to the aspiration for millions of families and business in emerging markets. In 2019, Envirofit will expand from Nairobi to peri-urban areas and is initiating pilots in Rwanda, India, Nigeria, and Guatemala. In the next three years, Envirofit will commercially expand operations across its existing markets in East Africa, West Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
