Stage 4: Transition to Scale

Kitkit School is currently available in English and Kiswahili. Developed in 2017, Kitkit School is a co-winner of the Global Learning XPRIZE Competition (announced on May 15, 2019). So far, several field tests conducted in a number of schools and under-resourced communities in Tanzania, Kenya, and Rwanda, have demonstrated meaningful learning gains and sustained engagement from learners. We are looking to scale our impact by adding enhanced functionalities and improving mobile phone compatibility. We are open to localizing into other languages as well.

According to UNESCO, 617 million children and adolescents worldwide – six out of ten – are not reaching minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics. In addition, 263 million children, adolescents, and youth around the world are not in schools. While education systems in developing countries have expanded schooling at an impressive rate in recent decades, there is an urgent need to drive up quality and learning.

Kitkit School is a tablet-based learning platform that helps every child succeed in building the foundational skills needed for literacy and math. Because of its easy-to-use design, it can be presented to the students for their independent exploration and learning, making it easy and adaptable in both formal school and out-of-school settings. It aims to reduce the impact of early failures in learning that creates downward spirals that push children away from education.

Target Beneficiaries

We aim to serve children in their early childhood through the early elementary level in low-resource environments in developing countries. With our current version available in English and Swahili, we are focusing on four East African countries, namely Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. Further funding can allow us to create a smartphone compatible version for easier distribution and cover additional language groups with Hindi and Arabic localization.

Mission and Vision

We envision a future where children's ability to read, write, and count is not bounded by their access to schools, a future where children living in the most remote villages and marginalized communities without quality formal education still can engage in learning driven by their own motivation and natural curiosity. We envision a future where no child, even those with disabilities, is left behind in learning foundational skills to become a thriving member of society.

Innovation Description

It is a collection of components that form a comprehensive tablet-based learning experience for early learners. With Kitkit School, children can 1) Engage with a curriculum of literacy and numeracy games in the Kitkit Learning App; 2) Explore books and videos in the Library; and 3) Enjoy making music and art in the Tools section. Learners go through a game-based curriculum with lots of engaging design elements and incentives to encourage learning. For more about the pedagogy, design, and research that provide the foundation of Kitkit School, please refer to our documents attached in the profile. It is an application that can be downloaded into a variety of Android devices and presented to children for their independent exploration and learning. As an open-source product, it can be adapted by other developers, and the content easily changed for use in other languages and other environments.

Competitive Advantage

Kitkit School has been carefully designed to support all children's independent learning, including those in constrained learning environments, and those that might have learning and developmental difficulties. It is designed so that all children can use it independently, regardless of their initial capacity. It is a globally minded product that can be easily adapted for use in other languages and contexts. It combines international best practices in literacy and math education with Universal Design for Learning principles. The Enuma team has designed Kitkit with the following principles in mind: Design with the User at the Center / Localize and Embed in Ecosystem of Support / Be Scalable and Sustainable / Continually Improve, Driven by Data / Use Open Standards, Open Data, Open Source, and Open Innovation / Ensure Accessibility, Independence, and Collaboration

Planned Goals and Milestones

To maximize Kitkit’s impact to early education, we are seeing 3 opportunities. 1) Support low-spec mobile devices that is common in developing countries 2) Enhance English curriculum for second language learners in English-using African countries, Strengthen early childhood curriculum, adding new languages for the regions in needs (i.e. Hini and Arabic) 3) Adding additional accessibility features for children with disabilities – sign language mode and high-contrast functionalities
