Innovation Description

The Syrian refugee crisis precipitated the need for tailored information about sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Access to this information helps combat gender-based violence and improve gender norms throughout the region. Recognizing an overabundance of SRH materials geared toward adults, Mercy Corps is convening Jordanian and Syrian adolescent girls to co- create SRH resources that address their needs. Through a design project with a team of IDEO.org designers, the Mercy Corps team decided to focus on puberty as an entrypoint for helping girls understand their bodies and their personal growth. The design project resulted in the creation of a peer- to-peer program where older girls (age 15-17) teach younger girls (age 9-12) about puberty through sessions facilitated by a storybook about puberty. The older girls have ownership over the flow of the sessions and are encouraged to add their own flair to the sessions, but by codifying the content in a storybook, the puberty-related content is provided in an accurate and appropriate way.
