The first phase of our innovation is developing a web/app-based telemedicine platform (using existing secured technologies) to enhance access to verified doctors, with a built-in electronic health record that gives the doctors access to vital patient information such as medical/surgical history, blood group, drug allergies, adverse drug reactions, and so on. We will equally make use of short messaging service (SMS) and quick codes (USSD) to connect those in communities without internet access. Our system will also give room for interoperability with partner healthcare providers. In this time of COVD-19 outbreak, we have been able to provide access to doctors remotely (through audio, video and text communication) thereby helping to educate people on prevention strategies, triage cases as low, medium, and high-risk based on travel/contact history and symptomatology while also providing recommendations based on NCDC guidelines. The second phase of our innovation is to develop a health services directory across Nigeria which will aggregate all health service providers including hospitals, pharmacies, laboratories, specialists and rare services, emergency services, care homes, health insurance providers, and so on. Information will be provided on their location, contact details, the scope of services provided, and pricing. This tool will empower Nigerians to be able to seek help in the right place when and where necessary.

Stage 3: Proof of Concept

DoctorDial is curtailing the spread of COVID19 pandemic through mass online campaigns, self-risk assessment with recommendations; and two-way communication with verified doctors via video, audio, and texts reaching over 5000 Nigerians within a month.

Problem

The health system in Nigeria is lacking infrastructure, manpower, & health financing despite a high disease burden from communicable & non-communicable diseases. The high disease burden is worsened by poor information and minimal prevention efforts. The resultant effect being an overwhelmed system/workforce, substandard healthcare delivery, & poor health indices. With the COVID19 outbreak, this situation might reach a catastrophic level without innovative interventions that address this problem

}

Solution

Our innovation will address these problems through three key areas: health prevention campaign using existing social interaction platforms to reduce overall disease burden; use telemedicine to address primary healthcare and to follow up on secondary healthcare problems thereby decongesting facility usage; using data-driven technology and artificial intelligence to connect every Nigerian to a timely and effective healthcare service when needed.

Target Beneficiaries

Primarily, our aim is to develop solutions that can cater to the need of low and middle-income citizens who live in and around communities with poor access to healthcare facilities, poor access to specialized health services and who by default have the least access to the health information that is needed for informed decision making.

Mission and Vision

Our vision: To empower every Nigerian with health information and access tool that promotes overall well-being in a measurable way. Our mission: To provide appropriate-technology based solutions for improving access to health information and health care services by underserved communities in Nigeria and Africa.

Competitive Advantage

What sets our innovation apart is the novelty (in Nigeria) of the use of eHealth as a tool for supporting the existing health system in the area of disease prevention, case triaging, enhancing communication link between primary and secondary providers, and remote monitoring of health indices. While there were many private 'players' who ventured into this field in the last five to seven years, most of them are no longer in the field of play not being able to withstand the initial challenges of this novel idea. However, we managed to keep our heads above the waters, learning, unlearning, re-learning, and waiting for the right opportunity to demonstrate our belief in this idea. The COVID-19 pandemic provided that opportunity to prove the viability of our concept. We strongly believe that with the right technical support, networking, and funding, we will be able to create a viable solution that solves real problems in healthcare delivery.

Planned Goals and Milestones

The next step for us is to perfect the first phase of our innovation which is the telemedicine web and app development and the incorporation of SMS and USSD codes for providing access to verified doctors. Our timeline for this phase is 6-8months.
