D.P Rice Farming Revolution

The innovation is about making farmer and rural community much richer than status quo through capital intensive rice farming, integrated rice farming, chemical free rice farming and eco-rice farming - it is REVOLUTION in rice farming practice.


Stage 3: Proof of Concept

The innovation has passed EXPERIMENTAL and PILOT STAGES. It is now ready for transition to scale. It is still a long way of before total victory of our revolution would be declared. However, results have told us a success story.

Conventional rice farming in Laos is labor intensive and has so far proved highly insufficient and made farmers poor even nobody wants to toil the land but leaves it for other alternative. Today, rural villages are only home to those very young and very old because working age population has left. As result, locally produced foods are scarce while imported foods increase. Furthermore, climate change makes thing worse and many farmers have no enough rice for all year round consumption.



The approach is indeed not SOLUTION but REVOLUTION in rice farming practice because it will make rice farmers earning 20 times higher than status quo through capital intensive rice farming (constructing concrete rice plots to keep water permanently), integrated rice farming (made in the concrete plots) and chemical free rice farming. With better income and living condition, young people will toil their lands and live their lives as proud farmers at home.

Target Beneficiaries

It is obvious that the innovation/approach is engineered for rural communities. Therefore, our primary beneficiaries are farmers and rural communities. However, the secondary beneficiaries of the innovation are confined to SME who will commercially deliver outputs from the rice farmers to general public. The general public and consumers are our final beneficiaries. They are not specific because our products and outputs are very basic necessities as rice, fish and cooking fuel.

Mission and Vision

The approach is made of 3 missions: (1) To improve environment and biodiversity, (2) To improve consumption behavior in urban community and (3) To improve food security to end hunger and malnutrition through Rice Farming Revolution. This ENTRY is principally made for the last mission. We have treated the missions as both obligation and mandate for benefit of future generations and the only planet we own. Our vision is to see greener world and food security for all.

Innovation Description

Climate change make life much harder for farmers and rural communities than ever before. Today, it is very difficult for farmers in Laos to feed 5 children though their parents could bring up 12 or even more children from the very same rice plots and farmlands they have inherited. The innovation is principally drawn from food availability level in the past and present. To make thing works, water level in rice plots must be abundant and plentiful. To make water sufficient for irrigating of rice farming all year round production, we have to collect it during the monsoon when heaven pours water down to earth and keep it in secured facilities. To take advantage of the bounty, we redesign the rice plots with concrete trenches. The concrete trenches can keep sufficient level of water in the plots all year round. With water sufficiency, farmers can practice rice-cum-fish/prawn throughout the year. From our experiment, the rice-cum-fish/prawn yield between $1.00 and $2.00/square meter/harvest circle. That means a hectare of rice plots that applies the innovation principal would yield up to $20,000.00 per harvest circle. However, in a year, 3.00 harvest circles could be made. Therefore, a farmer with 1.00 hectare of rice field could escape poverty within a year if he/she applies the innovation in his/her field. The innovation is indeed can be applied to aroids/taro and lotus farming with integration of fish or prawn. The roots achieve much higher yield than rice.

Competitive Advantage

The innovation is highly competitive because it is made of 4.00 qualifications including (1) Production difference: Unlike conventional rice farming, with the concrete trenches, water will be kept securely in rice plots all year round. With perfect supply of water, yield will be large and its quality high. Significantly, production cost will be very low in the long run because the concrete trenches last forever, (2) Product differentiation: All outputs will be fully certified organic. Conventional produces cannot compete with ours though can be made for substitution, (3) Price and value for money: As indicated, because our production cost is very low, we can sell our produces cheap or even cheaper than prices tagged by the conventional traders and farmers. It is value for money to decide ultimate result and (4) Consumer consciousness: No doubt, because of the qualifications, consumers will be all with us and make us the winner.

Planned Goals and Milestones

The innovation is not merely a solution but revolution. It has passed experimental and pilot stages. It is still a long way of before we can declare total victory for the revolution. However, experimental results indicate that it is the best alternative for aquatic rice farming in unpredictable environment because it is the most economically sufficient, commercially profitable and environmentally friendly. Yet, it can keep water and minimize risks. Without water, we can do nothing!
