Problem

Aflatoxin and Fumonisin cause health risks in animals and human beings. Information on the prevalence of aflatoxin and fumonisin in grains and animal feeds in Rwanda is scanty.

Solution

It enables early identification of aflatoxin contamination in grains and animal feeds so that proper gain and feed management can be designed. It also helps policy makers to set gain and feed quality standards.

Target Beneficiaries

Feed processors, feed vendors, smallholder livestock farmers, and consumers.

Innovation Description

The innovation is a diagnostic tool (ELISA test) for aflatoxin presence in grain and feed samples. The ELISA test is more cost-effective than alternative existing methods; it is also accurate, allowing for improved and more cost effective surveillance of aflatoxin contaminants in livestock feed.

Competitive Advantage

Current tests are either expensive or not accurate, this expands ability to test for mycotoxins since it is both cost-effective and accurate.
