Stage 4: Transition to Scale

Using extensive public heath delivery experience, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), the Patient Retention Solution addresses these two critical program needs related to attainment of the UNAIDS triple 90 targets specifically the second and third 90s. The predictive algorithm that powers this solution was developed using statistically robust anonymized patient data of over half a million patients and currently delivers predictive accuracy of over 80%.

Problem

Whilst ARVs have had a tremendous impact on improving the health of people living with HIV/AIDS, when patients default on their daily treatment, it can undo all the good. Healthcare providers don't know ahead of time which patients are at the highest risk of defaulting on their HIV treatment. They also don't know whether their high-risk patients are receiving the required interventions with fidelity on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Solution

Using extensive public heath delivery experience, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), the Patient Retention Solution predicts: 1. Patients that are on treatment who are at high risk of a first time missed appointment. 2. Patients who have already missed one appointment and are at high risk of a repeat missed appointment. Thereby improving patient outcomes and overall program impact. Foresight gives programs the ability to pre-emptively intervene and prevent loss to follow up, keeping more patients on treatment and saving lives

Target Beneficiaries

1. HIV/AIDS patients on treatment: by being supported to return to resume their treatment, their health and well being is being improved. 2. Healthcare workers: they are provided with tools to ensure that their services provided to patients are most effective 3. HIV/AIDS treatment program managers: preventing loss to follow up (LTFU) saves the costs incurred to bring a lost patient back into treatment and avoids catastrophic cost escalation due to issues associated with drug resistance. This ultimately enables programs to spend budgets more efficiently and effectively. It also enables programs to track the fidelity of interventions, assess which interventions yield the best results and which do not, and refine interventions appropriately.

Mission and Vision

Empowering Action. Changing Lives. Using almost two decades of experience and foremost technology, we design and deliver effective solutions to healthcare problems in emerging markets, empowering stakeholders to make the right decisions and implement the right actions that improve health outcomes and change lives

Innovation Description

Using extensive public heath delivery experience, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), the Patient Retention Solution addresses these two critical program needs related to attainment of the UNAIDS triple 90 targets, specifically the second and third 90s. The predictive algorithm that powers this solution was developed using statistically robust anonymized patient data of over half a million patients and currently delivers predictive accuracy of over 80%. The Patient Retention Solution currently generates two sets of predictions: Patients that are on treatment who are at high risk of a first time missed appointment. Patients who have already missed one appointment and are at high risk of a repeat missed appointment.

Competitive Advantage

This novel application of AI is the first of its kind in the HIV treatment sector in South Africa. It was previously not possible to identify patients on treatment at risk of missing their next appointment, and hence at risk of treatment defaulting.
