Faced with limited local record-keeping and low levels of literacy and connectivity, the WeMUNIZE program, implemented by local technology start-up Black Swan Tech Ltd, uses a combination of digital record keeping and community engagement to increase early childhood immunizations in Sokoto state.

Sokoto has one of the lowest child immunization rates in the world with only 1 in 10 children successfully completing their first year of immunizations. Sokoto has one of the lowest child immunization rates in the world with only 1 in 10 children successfully completing their first year of immunizations. This significantly contributes to Nigeria's poor immunization indices. Faced with limited local record-keeping, literacy & internet connectivity in the state, Black Swan Tech's WeMUNIZE uses a combination of digital record keeping & community engagement to increase early childhood immunizations. Coordinating with state government and local partners, WeMUNIZE sends robocalls voiced by community leaders, and SMS, to caregivers; urging them to immunize their children. Volunteers use WeMUNIZE to digitally record immunization information, then take & print a photo of the child as an effective incentive to caregivers for repeat visits. Records are monitored resulting in the reduction of dropout rates to 10%.

Problem

We aim to address the challenges of poor Routine Immunization uptake and RI data among the poorest, vulnerable and marginalized communities in Africa and the rest of the world. Thus reducing inequities of access, utilization and data to and for Routine Immunization services.

Competitive Advantage

The WeMUNIZE value matrix begins with the caregiver of the child whose immunization appointment is scheduled at the nearest facility. They are reminded of the child’s appointment when it is due. Male and female influential community leaders (both religious and traditional) who wish to support the efforts of routine immunization in their communities are coopted to upload voice recordings that are then customized to individual children and families. Local and state government officials involved in the effort to drive the demand for routine immunization get routine updates on the performance indices of individual facilities and communities. The state&RI partners benefit from the data generated from the platform to inform decision making and impact assessment in real time. Caregivers: 1. Proper and complete vaccination of all children in the prescribed age bracket. 2. Caregivers obtain physical photographs of their children for the entire period of immunization. Community Volunteers: 1. a tool which facilitates reportage and strengthens the ongoing Routine immunization advocacy efforts of frontline workers International Partners: 2.Cost-effective Routine Immunization advocacy platform 3.Sustainable platform for improving community engagement Government: 1. a platform for effective social behavior change communication with which the SPHCDA addresses high dropout rates 2.An efficient and effective data gathering tool to strengthen monitoring and evaluation efforts
