Stage 4: Transition to Scale
The "Beacon of Hope UAE", BOH, initiative was founded by Her Highness Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan in 2016 with three main focus areas, i.e. to bring hope through
light, reading and better health. BOH have reached more than 6800 children in 11 countries around the world. BOH is aiming to
establish ways to measure, increase and sustain its positive global impact.

concerned about children growing up in war-torn & improvised areas.
Through our initiative we try to positively impact their intellectual growth,
build their self-esteem & open up their eyes to possibilities & help
them make their own sustainable future utilizing renewable energy to build up
their communities & give them access to technological medical solutions
to bridge the gap between the need for advanced diagnostic medical assistance
& the lack of access to highly trained doctors.
the main assets of Beacon of hope UAE is the “beacon-in-a-box” educational
solar light kit. The kit consists of components that make-up an LED light
circuit that can be re-charged using solar energy. We have now reached more
than 6800 children around the world. We have raised funds to reach more than
double this number in our future missions. Apart from aiming to reach more
disadvantaged children we also aim to reach more advantaged children to give
them awareness and include them as child philanthropists. The other focus of Beacon of Hope UAE is
to emphasized literacy and promote healing through reading by partnering with
our sister organization “wanna read?” and another Emirati organization “dubai
cares” The final focus of Beacon of
Hope UAE is to provide access to state-of-the-art mobile applications
developed at the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovations
that helps trained and untrained staff in remote areas to get accurate
diagnostic information on genetic and heart disorders. We always strive to make fruitful
partnerships to improve lives of children around the world.
We plan to expand to more countries in Africa and more regions within the Arabian peninsula. We might also reach to the neighboring regions of Asia. As mentioned earlier, we managed to gather more funds to reach double the number of children we reached so far. Even though our team is made up of 12 essential members, we have over 200 volunteers that help us in preparing the kits for children around the world. We would love to have more volunteers as we expand our reach. One of our near future goals is to reach more advantaged children as part of an awareness and fund raising campaign through making the “beacon-in-a-box” kit as part of a class activity in the schools around the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and other Emirates of the UAE, increasing not only their sense of philanthropy but also teaching them about renewable energy and how it could help disadvantaged communities.
Planned Goals and Milestones
proud of the impact that our solution made in short time through our various
collaborations. Our initiative targets 3 main focus areas that are essential
to the healthy development & growth of children. Our “beacon-in-a-box”
solar light kit is unique because it is quirky & interesting & unlike
anything that child has seen in the environment they grew up in, it is
stimulating because they get to see what is usually under the hood, they make
it with their own hands & they can teach others how to make it. We could
hand out ready-made solar lamps but at the end of the day, what did the child
learn? Did they feel helpless receiving a gift from international strangers?
Or did they feel accomplished to make their own light with the help of those
strangers who at the end of the day become their favorite new friends in the
process of learning about renewable energy & building a personal solar
powered light? Our initiative is also
unique because it is collaborating with research institutions, like the
aforementioned pediatric surgical institute in Washington DC which provided
us with the apps that identify genetic disorders & heart murmurs
respectively, & the biorobotics lab in Italy as well as research labs in
the UAE to bring other creative innovations literally straight from “the
oven” to where it is desperately needed. With no profit other than the
positive global impact, the smiles we get & the hope we spread wherever
we take these innovations.
