We provide free legal information, guidance and support to people who fall in the category of the undeserved (people who are unable to receive legal information because they cannot afford a lawyer or cannot understand the complex legal language the law is normally shared through). Our services are provided in the following ways: Using online technologies like our websites and social media to disseminate legal information and share with and SMS and Interactive Voice platform to disseminate legal information through creative content which is easy to understand by the general population. Using innovative methods to educate our beneficiaries who do not have access to technology platforms or who are illiterate, about the laws that govern them and how to utilize these laws to protect themselves and to enforce their rights. This is in the form of community sensitisation and training. We also have the following projects running at BarefootLaw. The Legally Empowering Women Using Technology and Innovation (LEWUTI) project is focused on equipping women, especially the vulnerable and underserved, with knowledge and skills regarding their rights to property. mSME Garage focuses on providing legal information, guidance and support for micro and small businesses. The services are provided online and other supported by social media platforms. The mSME Garage also offers clinics for beneficiaries who wish to be trained on a particular aspect of business law.

Stage 4: Transition to Scale

Since 2012, we have actively developed our model to deliver meaningful impact. We are now rolling this model across Uganda, with the intention to scale across Africa. We are working with our partners The Mulago Foundation to transition to scaling.

Problem

There are approximately 2000 qualified advocates for over 36 million Ugandans. This makes access to legal assistance difficult, which results in unresolved disputes, perpetuation of injustices and inequality or the use of crude methods like mob justice, to solve legal issues.

Solution

BarefootLaw provides the public with free legal information and assistance using innovative approaches. We leverage technology in addition to traditional methods to offer free legal information and assistance.

Target Beneficiaries

Persons and/or communities that are unable to access adequate legal support.

Mission and Vision

Vision: BarefootLaw envisions a world in which every person -- natural, legal or electronic -- readily has access to justice and the law to empower themselves and their communities to thrive. Mission: Making access to justice and the Law readily available to 50 million people across Africa by 2030.

Competitive Advantage

Our competitive advantage lies in leveraging technology for scale and efficiency. Our model brings together all the online platforms we work on including; social media, websites, SMS onto one management system which enables a small team of about 10 lawyers to respond to over 100 legal cases in a day- ordinarily this would not be possible. We're also able to leverage the information we receive to predict the changing trends in legal needs in the country, e.g, analysing our data has shown trends of land conflict around specific areas and times of the year, and this has allowed us to respond proactively with legal information that is useful for persons and communities to learn, empower and protect themselves from getting into these conflicts. We are also building the foundation for future AI and ML systems by building response-automation systems that provide responses to simple legal questions. This will afford us efficiencies that will enable us scale further, faster and more agilely.

Planned Goals and Milestones

Our 3 year strategic plan is to scale our impact to reach 900,000 people in 2019, and 2,000,000 in 2021. By 2030, our goal is to provide access to our services to 50 million people across Africa. To achieve this, we will strengthen our human resource and technology capacities to efficiently serve our beneficiaries and work with community actors to extend our services to under-served persons and communities beyond the last mile.
