We inform and empower mothers in rural African communities to adopt healthy behaviors and to access maternal and child health services by providing timely, relevant and personalized health information on pregnancy, motherhood, safe delivery and healthy baby lifestyle.SMS and audio messages are targeted to a woman’s stage of pregnancy or the age of her child so that the information reflects exactly what she is experiencing at a particular time
How does your innovation work?
This platform will offer pregnant women, mothers with new born babies and their family members– located in every corner of the country and from any income level - healthy pregnancy advice and early childhood care information. This information includes time sensitive reminders for such events as antenatal clinic visits and taking of malaria prevention medication. This information is carefully timed and relevant to the specific registrant, like pregnant women or their supporters. The carefully targeted large range of healthy pregnancy topics, from ante-natal care (ANC) visit reminders to birth planning and ‘fun’ informative information for all these types of audiences, makes this a unique service

Stage 4: Transition to Scale

Our partnership with StartUp Health and admission to the StartUp Health Academy was a very important milestone in our journey to transform maternal and child health care in Kenya. With the coaching, support and promotion from StartUp Health Academy we are now well placed to transform maternal and child health care in Kenya Our content partner Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA) has provided us with age and stage-based messages reviewed by health care professionals and aligned with global best practices. The messages cover all aspects of pregnancy and motherhood. There are messages that also target supporters for example the husbands also receive messages We have received very positive feedback from the pilot phase and currently as we launch to the market more than 50 hundred users are signing up for the service every month. Mothers are appreciating the message content and how informative and educative it is. Registered users are referring other mothers to register. More than 50% increase in monthly subscriptions. We are also in the final stages of signing a partnership agreement with Uridu.org. URIDU is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that empowers rural women in developing and emerging countries.

Problem

Only 44% of Kenyan women give birth in the presence of skilled health personnel, who are able to address complications. Only 39% of women use modern methods of birth control, which, by allowing women to space and plan their pregnancies, reduces the risk of maternal death. And 106 girls give birth out of every 1,000 girls aged 15 to 19 The state of maternal and child mortality in Kenya is worrying with the statistics showing at least 8,000 women die while giving birth in Kenya every year.

Solution

BabyMed is a mobile-messaging based service, providing moms and the gatekeepers within their families (usually spouses, mothers, and mothers-in-law) with information about how to take care of themselves and their babies, and includes an entirely separate service for husbands that reinforces messages that their wives are receiving and includes information on how to best care for their loved ones during pregnancy and early childhood

Target Beneficiaries

moms and the gatekeepers within their families (usually spouses, mothers, and mothers-in-law)

Mission and Vision

Our messages include information on self-care during and after pregnancy, as well as information on when to seek care and how to care for a new-born. We recognize the need for linking subscribers to local health services, and to build strong relationships with local health providers With increased access to high quality, relevant local health information, mothers and families would demonstrate improved health-seeking and preventative behaviors, including uptake of antenatal care, early care-seeking in response to childhood illness, hand washing, cord care, etc., that should ultimately contribute to improved maternal and child survival

Competitive Advantage

BabyMed is a mobile health platform offering personalized health information on maternal and child health care. The platform integrates all healthy pregnancy and safe motherhood topics into one solution We provide age- and stage-based messages aligned with global best practices, empowering women to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. We leverage on the high number of mobile devices to inform and empower mothers to adopt healthy behaviors and to access maternal and child health services. We sensitize pregnant women in low-income areas on why they should do their Ante Natal Care (ANC) and provide follow up. We notify subscribed women by SMS on when they should do their Ante Natal Care(ANC) visits and tell them why
