A water quality field testing solution that is based on Akvo's proven field data collection and visualisation platform.

Target Beneficiaries

The poorest people in the world have the largest challenge with clean drinking water. Our collaborations with national government and UNICEF rolls out these solutions in Sub-Saharan African countries and regions, ultimately ensuring everyone can know if their water is safe to drink.

Mission and Vision

Akvo's vision is for Africa to have safe drinking water for everyone. Akvo's mission is to supply the water quality testing solution rolled out at national scale across dozens of countries.

Innovation Description

Enumerators working in the field perform water quality tests as they work on ongoing monitoring of water access and water quality. The water quality testing system is integrated with the country scale Akvo field data collection system which operates from a smartphone. Proven water quality tests are easily operated in the field, including: microbiology, strip tests, colorimetry tests and sensors.

The Akvo data system automatically update reports, maps, graphs and dashboards as water quality data comes in from the field. Allowing supervisors and managers to actively interact with the data and have a near realtime view of the situation. The water quality data system can be integrated with SMS based local fault reporting and feedback systems, that allows the citizens to be kept up to date on the progress of water quality testing and planned repair/maintenance work.

Competitive Advantage

Akvo's solutions is has a strong competitive advantage for several reasons:
- Akvo Caddisfly tightly integrates multi-parameter water quality testing in a simple to use and field tested package
- Akvo Caddisfly has proven to be less expensive, more reliable and easier to roll out at scale, than existing laboratory based solutions
- Akvo's field data system is well know and in large-scale use for collecting water access data in over twenty Sub-Saharan African countries
- Akvo works closely with UNICEF and country governments in Africa in implementing water access data systems in a dozen countries
- Akvo has a decade of experience in rolling out these type of systems through field offices across Africa

Planned Goals and Milestones
