Mandatory Requirements

We make grants to:
-intermediary organizations that build the capacity of nonprofits and independent civic leaders to promote community-level development, -organize around key issues, and strengthen participatory approaches to advocacy and rights protection;
-networks and nonprofits that mobilize individuals and grassroots civic initiatives on key issues that relate to strengthening democratic values and practices; and
-networks and support organizations that promote the development of community schools in countries where the movement has taken root, including Ukraine, Moldova and parts of the Western Balkans.

Other Requirements

What we do not fund
-No grants or loans to individuals.
-No grants or capital development, research, project replication or endowment unless these activities grow out of work already being funded by Mott.
-No grants for religious activities or programs serving specific religious groups or denominations. However, faith-based organizations may submit inquiries if the project falls within our guidelines and serves a broad segment of the population.
-Film and video projects, books, scholarships and fellowships rarely are funded.

Application And Awards Process

While the Mott Foundation believes it’s important to maintain flexibility in our grantmaking, applicants should understand that funding for unsolicited proposals is limited. To ensure that any inquiries we receive are answered in a timely way, we ask you to please use the following letter of inquiry (LOI) form.

Your request will be forwarded to and reviewed by Foundation staff, and you should receive a reply within 90 days.
