The Yale African Development Conference

The Yale Association for African Peace and Development (YAAPD) seeks to ignite passion among students and youth at-large for conflict resolution, peace, and development in Africa. Cognizant of awareness, discourse, and action as a driver of continental development, YAAPD organizes an annual conference on Yale’s campus, to unite youth interested in conflict resolution, peace, and development in Africa. This conference, branded “The Yale African Development Conference”, equips students with the necessary tools, and networks to effect subsequent change. Kofi Annan once said, “More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together.” This is at the core of development and progress in Africa. Moreover, many of the issues we care about are multifaceted and have to be tackled from diverse perspectives, with the collaboration of many kinds of people. This year’s Yale Conference for African Peace and Development will consider how various institutions, communities, sectors, and nations can collaborate to contribute to peace and development on the continent.

The aim of the conference is to put diverse people in conversation about issues that they are working on: how, for example, could a climate scientist, an artist, and a businessperson work together to eradicate climate change? Specifically, the conference will address these issues through four major themes: identity, democracy, business & technology, and sustainability. In the Identity Panel, we will examine topics such as the criminalization of homosexuality in various African countries, issues of ethnic conflict, the prevalence of religion-based terrorism in several countries. In the Democracy Panel, we will think about processes such elections, transparency, and the role of civil society. In the Business & Technology Panel, we will consider the incredible innovation and creativity arising from the continent, in the form of mobile money, medical technology, etc. And lastly, in the Sustainability panel, we will focus on environmental issues, as well as public health in order how to determine how African countries can grow responsibly and sustainably.
